Another thing that we must keep in mind is that, before Jesus’ death, He celebrated the Passover with his 12 disciples on Nisan 14th. After sending Judas out, He then instituted what we call the New Covenant Passover which did not require the slaughtering of a lamb because Jesus Christ was our Passover Lamb. You see, the Passover celebration, instituted in Exodus, was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ did not do away with the celebration. He fulfilled it and then, He instituted a New Covenant Passover celebration that would continue for eternity, even in heaven.
Read what God told the Israelites about why they celebrated the Passover: Exodus 12:14,23-27
Read what Jesus told his disciples about keeping the New Covenant Passover: Matthew 26:17-29
There was a purpose for this celebration.
The significance of the Passover celebration (old and new) is not about following the traditions of men. Instead, it is about remembering:
- that God is able – to deliver you with a mighty hand from your enemies; when things seem impossible and you feel like you are in between a rock and a hard spot, God will part seas so that you can pass through on dry ground and that will be the last time that you will see your enemies.
- that God is a protector – He will shield you from harm so that no weapon formed against you will prosper because anyone who comes up against you will find themselves fighting against God;
- that God is a banner bearer – He leads His people safely through and we are to walk with Him and follow His lead.
- that God is our All in all – The way God, by a mighty hand, delivered his people from bondage, He didn’t want them to ever forget that and this was the significance of Passover.
Passover is about remembering and never forgetting, as we continue our journey called LIFE in this world, that we serve a mighty GOD who is LIVING, ALL-Powerful, ALL-Knowing, Magnificent, Omniscient, Omnipotent, who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above, ALL that we could think or ask. We come up against so much in this world. There are so many giants. But nothing is impossible for us to overcome when we are walking with the Lord because our Heavenly Father God fights ALL of our battles for us.
Jesus tried to remind us to be like little children (Matthew 18:1-3) in that they are completely reliant upon their parents for everything. Children do not worry about where they will live, what they will eat, or what they will wear because their parents provide these things for them. They just wake up every day ready to experience the day. They wake up every day with an expectation that these things will be there automatically. This is the trustful reliance that we are to have on our Heavenly Father who provides for and sustains us. This is what Passover reminds us of. Passover reminds us of how our Heavenly Father takes care of us and delivers us out of the situations we find ourselves in.
Passover happens once a year on the designated time the that Lord Himself chose, the fourteenth day of the month of ABIB which was to be the first month of the year for the people of God. Our Heavenly Father, knowing our makeup (Psalm 103:13-14), knows that we are forgetful and need to be reminded. (Jeremiah 2:32; James 1:22-25) This is the purpose of the Holy days. They serve as reminders.

Preparation is Never Lost Time.
As I was considering these things prayerfully before the Lord, before sharing them here, look at what the Holy Spirit led me to.
John 10: 27 NKJV
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
Notice the difference here in comparison to what many will hear (Matthew 7:21-23) and what the five foolish virgins heard (Matthew 25:12).
Here we are told, regarding those who hear Jesus’ voice and follow Him, that He knows them. So our listening and obeying is of the utmost importance.
Listen to what Jesus said about our listening and obeying:
Read John 14:15-17
Read John 14:21-24
Read 1 John 5:1-5
Read Luke 6:46
After having carefully considered God’s Word regarding this celebration that HE instituted as an everlasting ordinance, next pray and ask the Lord to help you to understand this.
The Holy Spirit who is your tutor (John 14:26), assigned to lead you in all truth (John 16:13), will do just that. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in understanding this celebration.
