Lecture 1
Not All Covered Feet Are Shod
Does having a shod foot simply mean that one has shoes on?
Does it matter what type of shoes one has on?
I had to consider this closely because when we look at pictures of shod feet that reference the armor of God, the pictures are mostly of sandaled feet. Take note of that the next time you see someone dressed in their whole armor of God. Pay attention to what is worn.
So when talking about the armor of God and being battle-ready, when referencing soldiers of the Lord who are ready for war, I just can’t seem to equate having sandals on as having my feet shod.
Listen, I am a very visual person. So I imagined what it would be like being out on the battlefield with sandals on and someone or something steps on my exposed toes. That would be the end of the battle for me.
I am so serious right now. Let a horse or the wheel of a war chariot, or even my enemy that I am fighting with step down on my toes in the middle of the battle – that would take me out.
In the middle of the fight, as I am trying to run in my sandals, let the ground catch my sandal the wrong way and my shoe bend from up under my feet and my toe scrape the ground or hit a rock; or, let a pebble get between my foot and the shoe while I’m trying to be great on the battleground.
So, here I am looking for shoes to represent having my feet shod and I am left feeling like people do not understand what it means to be dressed for battle because the last thing that you would want to leave exposed would be your feet.
Okay, I realize that my interpretations and imaginations of having issues with my shoes while in battle might sound funny to you. I also realize that you might not be aware that this year, within a matter of two months, I have had two separate pairs of sandal-wedged shoes break on me on two separate occasions which caused me to have to return home with one less pair of shoes. So it is easy for me to reject the cute warrior girl picture with the killer shoes on that are sandaled at the feet. So again I ask…
If you want to be battle ready, you need to cover your toes. I am so serious right now that I want to remind you that some jobs require their employees to wear steel-toed slip-resistant shoes to protect their toes.
For those who do know me, having become familiar with my writing style, or have followed me on my social media account, you know that I do have a bible story to share that would remind you of why it is necessary for you to properly shod your feet.
This story takes place in the days of Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream of this tall idol that turned out to be a representation of him. Each area of this idol was made up of a different composite with the feet being a mixture of clay and iron. This story is found in Daniel, chapter 2.
Where was the idol hit?
Was the idol weak where it was hit? Why?
After reading the description of the idol, the next thing you see is a rock that comes out of heaven that strikes the idol on those exposed toes, and well, you see the picture. The idol falls.
So with emphasis, I want to encourage you to not undermine the importance of this piece of the armor of God because of having been subtly inculcated with the erroneous idea that we are to have our feet shod with sandals. I know that it might seem like I am making a big deal out of nothing. But understand that for years I downplayed the seriousness of this piece of garment by thinking that it only meant that wherever I went I was to be peaceable, as far as it depended upon me.
While this is scriptural that we are to be peaceable with all men, we don’t want to miss or underplay the importance of what it means to shod our feet.
Romans 12:18 King James Version
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Because feet are our first mode of transportation, yes we are to put on peace, walk in peace, and be peaceful no matter where we go. This simple view is mainly instigated by the fact that when we picture our feet being shod many times what comes to mind is the pictures we have seen of warriors wearing these really cute and fashionable sandals.
If you were to go to Google and search feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace IMAGES, you will find that you will see more pictures of a shod foot that has exposed toes. This is a seed that has been strategically planted in my thoughts for years without my realizing that it was an incorrect seed of thought.
The more that I kept getting sent back to this piece of garment to consider it, the more I learned that there was more to this piece of the armor of God than what meets the eye.
